Refill Friction Stir Spot Welding (Refill FSSW) of magnesium lithium alloys: effects of air and argon cooling

چکیده

Magnesium-lithium alloys are among the lightest commercially-available structural alloys. However, reactive nature of Mg and Li makes fusion welding this family very difficult, if not impossible. The solid-state joining processes considered suitable alternatives since can be carried out at temperatures well below melting these Refill Friction Stir Spot Welding (Refill FSSW) 2.2 mm thick Mg-Li plates, using air argon as cooling gas, was investigated. Initial examinations revealed formation adherent oxides-based residues on tool shoulder. microstructural examination air-cooled samples showed presence oxide inclusions within weldment. As expected, argon-cooled process reduced additionally resulted in flat smooth welded surfaces. Nevertheless, somehow unexpectedly, had no noticeable effect shear strength or microhardness joints.

Study of Mechanical Properties Change During Friction Stir Spot Welding of Aluminium Alloys

The Friction Stir Welding process is now 20 years old and the interest in it and its potential continues to increase dramatically. FSW can be applied to a multitude of products with varying material types and thicknesses. However, a continuous weld is not always required to meet the product performance requirements. Thus, one can consider some form of intermittent weld, such as Friction Stir Sp...

The Mechanical Properties Evaluation of the Welded Sheets of AA 3105 Aluminum Alloy Using Friction Stir Spot Welding (FSSW)

Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is a type of solid state welding that is used in the connection of small pieces and light metals such as aluminum alloy especially. The technical problem during melting of aluminum alloys is one of the most important reasons for developing application of friction stir welding for aluminum alloys. In this research, the effects of important processing parameters ...

Friction stir welding of dissimilar alloys – a perspective

Friction stir welding does not involve bulk melting of the components that are joined. This has inspired attempts to exploit it for joining materials which differ in properties, chemical composition or structure, and where fusion can lead to detrimental reactions. The purpose of this special issue of Science and Technology of Welding and Joining was to assess the status of friction stir welding...

Liquation Cracking of Dissimilar Aluminum Alloys during Friction Stir Welding

A liquation cracking mechanism of dissimilar Al alloys during the friction stir welding (FSW) is suggested in this study. To identify the mechanism, the precipitates were analyzed and Al-Mg-Cu phase diagrams were calculated. Electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) analysis and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) were also conducted. In the same manner as constitutional liquation, at high hea...

Friction Stir Welding of Aluminum Alloys: A Review

Friction stir welding is a solid state joining process. High strength aluminum alloys are widely used in aircraft and marine industries. Generally, the mechanical properties of fusion welded aluminum joints are poor. As friction stir welding occurs in solid state, no solidification structures are created thereby eliminating the brittle and eutectic phases common in fusion welding of high streng...
